Road Trip - Packing For Your Dog
Are you new to the road trip and agility trial scene and are wondering what to pack for your dog? Here is a list, which is a good place to start. As you start travelling, you will no doubt think of something else to add.
Water – it is a good idea to bring your own water from home to avoid any intestinal upsets, as dogs can have sensitive stomachs.
Food – bring enough to last for the days you will be away from home, plus a little extra incase of unforeseen circumstances.
Dishes – there are no-spill water bowls ideal for in the car or crate and fold-up canvas dishes that pack away easier.
Treats – use your dog’s favorite treats, or something extra special (ie: liver), to reward them for paying attention or for easing travel nerves.
Toys – a great way to warm your dog up before a run and the reward for a job well done.
Extra Collars and Leashes – they are easy to misplace so be prepared. Make sure your dog’s ID tag is on the collar, by chance they get lost. There are slip leashes (leash and color in one) available that are ideal for agility.
Poop Bags – it never fails, you don’t think your dog has to go and then they surprise you and catch you unprepared.
Crate and/or X-pen – there is a lot of down-time for your dog between runs, so they need somewhere comfortable to relax. Bring blankets or foam mats for added comfort. For well-trained dogs that don’t object to being crated, a mesh crate is great. It is very light and folds up for easy transport.
Extra Blankets or Towels – to cover the bed in a hotel room, to dry off a wet dog, etc.
Pet First Aid Kit – you never know…
Agility Rule Book and Dog ID Card – necessities for agility trials
Graph Paper and Pens – to copy the courses to study beforehand incase they don’t supply copies.
Camcorder – a great learning tool. Tape your run to see what you handled well and what you still need to work on.
Shade Tent or Some Other Cover - to keep your dog out of the rain or sun at outdoor trials.
Happy Trials!
